Helensville Riverside Walkway
This project links the Kaipara Riverside Walkway with the shopping strip on Commercial Road in the centre of Helensville. The site visually and physically links the main street and the river and is currently used for car parking.
The aim of the design was to prioritise vehicular and pedestrian flow through the site and create a more pedestrian friendly environment with better access to the river. The project involved community consultation, particularly liaising with the local business community and Helensville Riverside Heritage Group.
The design establishes the following elements to restructure site use:
- The redesigned parking area involves an upgrade of amenities and creation of a lookout, decks and wharf as a riverside focus for the commercial area
- Connections to walkways along the riverside will encourage the flow of pedestrians from the commercial area, where there are views of the river, to a more personal experience of the riverside environment
- Activity in the commercial area will be directed gradually towards the riverside by the creation and definition of a pedestrian zone along the rear of the shops, encouraging shops to reorientate towards the river taking advantage of the views
